Exstew Valley and Waterfalls

Due to an unmarked entrance way, the Exstew Valley remains one of the best kept secrets close to Terrace.

Approximately 38km west of Terrace, most travellers are too busy being amazed by the unforgetable scenery that makes the drive to Prince Rupert one of the most memorable in all of Canada to notice the old logging road turnoff about 500 meters prior to crossing Exstew River highway bridge. The logging road, which is about to become active again later in 2006, is not really marked, and unless you're closely watching the tiny river marking signs, it is tough to keep track of the many rivers merging with the Skeena.

But those who know where they are going and venture up this way are rewarded with a gorgeous valley full of lush green vegetation, some steep rock cliffs and one of the most amazing waterfalls the area has to offer. There is also an old forestry campground with 8 picnic tables and open campsites. The fishing is said to be good here.

The logging road is a rough drive, although motorhomes and 5th-wheel trailers often head out to the forestry campground. Once pulling off the highway you will immediately cross unmanned railroad tracks, so be sure to stop and watch for the trains.

At approximately 6.2 km you will turn left for the Exstew River Campground. Be warned though. While the site is free, amenities are non-existent and it is a popular weekend gathering spot for hard-partying teenagers who are looking for a place not easily accessible by the police.

Or you can stay on the main road and drive for about 10 km until you get to a fork. From here, there are two ways to get to the 100 foot high Exstew Valley Falls, which are truly spectacular and worth the drive.

You can either stay right, and then turn left at the next fork. Drive until the end and you’ll find a trailhead. From there, it’s a 20-30 minute hike to the falls. The trail is steep, and muddy in areas due to the mist of the falls. The Caledonia high school carpentry class has made the trail somewhat easier by building steps over some of the muddiest areas. This nice addition was dubbed by the class of 2000 as the "stairway to heaven."

Or you could go left at the original fork, then drive past two bridges and park when you see a trail on the left side. It should be marked by a pink ribbon. From here, hike 5-10 minutes to the same falls, which may also be known to some as Rockcliff Falls.

Both hiking trails, though steep and wet, are short and remedial and fine for beginners and children. It should be noted though that the Exstew Valley is ripe with berries and bears do frequent the area.

I'm not sure about your alternate route... it sounds like you are describing how to get to the smaller falls on the west side of the river vs. the big falls on the east side?
